Writing and Reading

Updated: Aug 27

A sampling of things I've written...:

Matt and Shannon Heaton are a husband-wife duo who play delightful, high-quality Irish traditional music, and have a way of building and engaging a community of listeners and other musicians. I caught up with them around when they released their new album. Boston Irish

Maura Shawn Scanlin has been in the Boston area for several years, and become a mainstay of the area Celtic scene. She draws on a number of wellsprings for her music, from Irish and Scottish to Americana to classical, and can also pluck a five-string banjo and sing her original songs, low-key and introspective but with a keen awareness of – and appreciation for – the world beyond and the people in it. BostonIrish

Altan is one of the more storied Irish traditional bands of the past few decades, and they came to Boston recently to show off their new album and new line-up. I spoke with co-founder Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh about both. BostonIrish

•Boston College engineering, nursing, and computer science faculty and students team up for a project targeting infant malnutrition. Boston College Chronicle

•Karen Bullock, an acclaimed and award-winning researcher in health-related equity and inclusion issues, has shown a commitment to improved care for diverse, vulnerable, and underrepresented patient populations. Boston College Chronicle

•The BC School of Social Work's Latinx Leadership Initiative marks a successful first decade of preparing bilingual and bicultural social workers to accompany Latinx communities in developing sustainable solutions to complex problems in health, education, housing, and other areas. Boston College Chronicle

...and stuff I've read of late:

•Gilead, Marilynne Robinson

•Hostages: The People Who Kidnapped Themselves, Mariam Arif Gassem

•The Comics: An Illustrated History of Comic Strip Art, Jerry Robinson

•The Harlem Shuffle, Colson Whitehead
